Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are custom-made shells of tooth-colored ceramic material placed over the surface of the tooth
Porcelain veneers are placed to:
- Cover worn, chipped, or cracked enamel: age-proof your smile
- Improve the color of darkened teeth, masking stains from medications, coffee, tea, and cigarette smoking
- Create ideal tooth shape: correct teeth that are too small, too short, or too large
- Esthetically straighten teeth that are crowded, “gappy”, or otherwise misaligned
What are the advantages of veneers?
- Long-lasting: no need to replace as frequently as bonding restorations
- Conservative: minimal amount of natural tooth must be altered
- Stain-resistant: do not change color over time, unlike bonding materials
- Customized to each patient
- Beautiful results, impossible to tell difference between veneers and natural tooth
What is the difference between a veneer and a crown?
Crowns, or “caps”, are placed to preserve teeth that have been damaged structurally or undermined by extensive decay. They are also placed after a tooth has had a root canal because the tooth becomes non-vital and, therefore, extremely brittle, so the crown is placed to protect that tooth from fracture. Crowns are also placed in areas where veneer coverage would be deemed insufficient to obtain the desired esthetic effect.
A veneer is a conservative ceramic restoration placed over the surface of a tooth. Veneers placed on teeth that are structurally sound to correct cracked enamel, relieve minor crowding, and whiten discolored teeth.
